After hosting the European Open in the men’s section of the draw, Antwerp will now play host to a women’s tennis event as well with the WTA Diamond Games. This tournament will make a return to the circuit after having last been held in 2015.
Antwerp had hosted the Diamond Games for the first time in 2002 as a Tier II tournament before it went on a hiatus between 2009 and 2014.
The competition returned as a Premier event in 2015 but that was the last time it was played.
The Diamond Games, called so because of the tournament’s unique nature of offering a trophy to any player who wins the title three times in five years, will make a return in 2023 after the WTA St. Petersburg looks to have been cancelled.
2023 WTA Antwerp Schedule & Dates
The latest edition of the WTA Antwerp will kick-start from Monday, February 6 with its first round matches. The tournament will also see a couple of rounds of qualifiers to be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 4 and 5.
The women’s singles final for the tournament will be played on Sunday, February 12.

What Happened at the 2022 Antwerp Open?
As mentioned earlier, the Diamond Games haven’t been played as a part of the WTA circuit since 2015. They were held between 2002 and 2008 and then again once in 2015.
Andrea Petkovic had won the title in 2015 when she got a walkover from Carla Suarez Navarro in the final. Suarez Navarro had suffered a neck injury before the title-decider.
Top seeded Eugenie Bouchard had a first round bye but suffered a second round defeat to Mona Barthel, which is exactly what happened to the second seeded and local player Angelique Kerber as well.
