Iga Swiatek v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Ostrava Open and Swiatek had won it in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Swiatek Hoping a 2022 Repeat

What do Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, Paris, New York and San Diego have in common? Well, these are all the cities in which Swiatek won a tennis title in 2022!

Yes, that’s right, Swiatek won eight tournaments last season which included two Grand Slam victories and four other WTA 1000 wins to carve out a place in tennis history for herself.

Not only did Swiatek end the season ranked number one in the world, she is at more than double the points (11085) of the second-ranked Ons Jabeur (5055). That kind of dominance has been rarely seen in women’s tennis and never since Serena Williams lost her foothold as the top-ranked player.

Swiatek will hope she can continue with the same kind of rhythm and keep notching up those wins as she steps into a new season. And her first task is to douse the Putintseva fire, a player who has tested some of the best in the world despite having never risen higher than 27th on the WTA charts.

Putintseva Goes Down Fighting to Bencic

Putintseva featured in her first match at the United Cup against Belinda Bencic and while she held her own for most part of the first set, the Swiss number one managed to carve out a straight-set win in the end.

Bencic was kept on court for nearly two hours by Putintseva before the Kazakh lost 7-6 (0), 6-3 to her opponent.

After getting an early break, Putintseva raced off to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. From there on, however, Bencic clawed back slowly, but surely, to first push the set into the tie-breaker and then blank Putintseva in it.

Putintseva was a break up in the very first game of the second set but dropped her serves on back to back occasions in the sixth and eighth games to go down fighting.

She faces a tougher challenge in her second match and will hope she can put up an extended fight.

Swiatek v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Swiatek should not have a lot of worries except for rustiness and that’s where Putintseva could steal an early march. Still, a straight-set win beckons for the Pole.
