Fritz Off to a Great Start

Taylor Fritz won his singles and mixed doubles matches on Thursday and Friday respectively against the Czech Republic to help Team USA win the tie 4-1.

The World no. 9, who is coming off a fantastic 2022 season, needed just an hour and 16 minutes to beat Jiri Lehecka in straight sets in the singles contest. Fritz broke the world no. 81 once in each set and saved both the break points that he faced in the contest to register a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The 25-year-old American then partnered with Jessica Pegula to win the mixed doubled contest on Friday, by beating the Czech pair of Lehecka and Marie Bouzkova 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.

The American, who had just one title before the start of the 2022 season, won three titles last year, including his maiden ATP 1000 title in Indian Wells.

Overall, Fritz, who broke into the top 10 for the first time last year, finished the season with a 46-21 record. He clinched the Indian Wells title by beating Rafael Nadal in the final and also won the titles in Eastbourne and Tokyo by beating Maxime Cressy and Frances Tiafoe respectively.

He was also a semifinalist at the ATP Finals and is leading the American charge along with Jessica Pegula at the United Cup. Can he win his singles match against the Germans as well?

Zverev Loses on Return

Back in action after a being sidelined by an injury, Alexander Zverev had a tough start as he went down to the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka in straights sets in a Group C encounter in Sydney.

The German, ranked no. 12th in the world, created seven break points in the match, but he could convert just one of them. In contrast Lehecka had eight chances to break the German and he capitalised on half of them.

The Czech, who won 77% of his points on the back of his first delivery, needed an hour and 30 minutes to beat the 25-year-old, 6-4, 6-2.

Zverev was out of action for six months after he tore three ligaments in his right ankle during the French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal in June. He then suffered a bone edema in September, which further delayed his return to court.

A two-time ATP Finals champions and the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist, Zverev was 29-10 during the injury-hit 2022. The 19-time tour-level champion was a finalist in Montpellier and Madrid, going down to Alexander Bublik and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.

He also reached three semifinals in Monte-Carlo, Rome and Roland Garros, before being halted by the injury.

Taylor Fritz v Alexander Zverev Prediction and Tip

While Fritz is in top form, Zverev is rusty and will need more matches under his belt to regain the pre-injury form. This should be a one-sided affair with Fritz winning in straight sets.
