Tsitsipas Leads Greece to Victory Over Bulgaria
Stefanos Tsitsipas played a key role in Greece’s 4-1 win over Bulgaria in the first round of matches of Group A in Perth.
First the world no. 4 rallied from a set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov in the singles rubber on Thursday and then he partnered with Maria Sakkari to beat the Bulgarian duo of Adrian Andreev and Gergana Topalova in the mixed doubles on Friday.
In the singles rubber, Tsitsipas was broken in the final game of the first set as Dimitrov drew first blood. However, the Greek hit back in the second, by breaking the Bulgarian twice and tying the match at one-set apiece. Neither player was broken in the final set, but Tsitsipas edged out Dimitrov in a closely contested tiebreak to seal a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Tsitsipas and Sakkari were dominant in the mixed doubles match, winning it 6-4, 6-4.
Tsitsipas is coming off a fantastic 61-24 season, which saw him reach seven finals, but he won just two titles, defending the title in Monte-Carlo and triumphing in Mallorca.
The nine-time tour-level champion would be disappointed not to have added more titles in 2022, but will be hoping to make up for it this year.

Goffin Goes Down to Dimitrov
David Goffin lost his opening singles match in the tournament against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday as a result of which Belgium and Bulgaria ended 1-1 on day 3.
The world No. 53 was a break down early in the first set, but he pulled the break back and sent the set back on serve. However, Dimitrov got a second break late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.
In the second set, Goffin broke in the very first game, but Dimitrov responded with an immediate break.
The Bulgarian then broke in the last game of the set to clinch the match 6-4, 7-5.
Dimitrov out-aced the former world no. 7, 10-2, converted 4 of 7 break points and saved 6 of 8 during the one hour and 43 minutes contest.
After struggling for a while with form and injury in 2021 and early part of 2022, Goffin found form in the middle of the last season.
Goffin won his sixth career title by beating Alex Molcan in the final in Morocco. It was also the tournament that saw him register his 300th match win.
The Belgian then reached the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon for the second time in his career, but didn’t finish the season well, reaching just one quarterfinal in his last five indoor tournaments.
