21-year-old Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be pleased with how she fared last year. She reached her career-best ranking at the #64 position and is starting the 2023 season on the same footing.
While her tally was an impressive 42-23, most of those stats are her clay-court antics (29-14). It isn’t to say she was bad on hard turf; she did bag 12 wins with just six defeats.
Among her highlights were two Challenger finals and three ITF finals; four of those five came on clay courts.
Cocciaretto closed the season with the BJK Cup Finals, where she fell to Bianca Andreescu and Jil Teichmann. As for her performance in Auckland, she last played here in 2020 – losing to Aliona Bolskova in the qualifiers.

Blinkova, Coming off a Good Run
Anna Blinkova, age 24, is starting the new season with a fair bit of wind in her sails.
The Russian last competed in the Limoges Challenger just two weeks ago, where she reached the semifinal – beating Sofia Kenin, Greet Minnen, and Ana Bogdan en route.
That result took Blinkova’s 2022 tally to 44-29 (27-16 on hard courts). Her biggest highlight was her title run in the Transylvania Open, where she lifted her first WTA title after starting as a qualifier.
In addition, she was the runner-up in three French ITF tournaments.

At 4/5, Cocciaretto is the odds-on favourite for this one, but Blinkova makes for a good value bet given her opponent’s lack of hard-court form.
