Aryna Sabalenka v Luidmilla Samsonova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the Guadalajara Open in 2022 where Samsonova defeated Sabalenka in three sets.

Sure, Sabalenka made it to three tournament finals in 2022 including one at the WTA Finals, but without a single title under her belt and a fall in the rankings from her career-best number two in the world to the current fifth, it seemed like she could have done slightly better.
Again, it was the season where Iga Swiatek took everything by storm so Sabalenka might not have had the easiest time but following on from 10 WTA titles from the previous four years, winning nothing in 2022 seems a tad underwhelming.
What Sabalenka will need is to get going in 2023 with a strong start against a player who has beaten her in their only outing.
If her confidence has slightly eroded because of her previous results, the Belarusian needn’t look back too much more than her WTA Finals appearance where she stunned Swiatek in the semifinal.
A solid performance against Samsonova can be expected here.

Samsonova Comes Back from Behind against Zhang
Shuai Zhang is currently 25th in the world on the back of an excellent previous season in which she also won a WTA title and when she took the first set against Samsonova, it looked like she was defying the odds.
After all Samsonova had gone into their first round encounter at 1/4 odds to win it but then needed over two hours to clinch the second round berth.
She won 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 having needed to overcome a set and a break down in the second to seal the deal. Once Zhang failed to convert her chances and Samsonova levelled the encounter, the Chinese player fell apart in the final set.
Samsonova, who had won three titles last year, will hope she can continue exhibiting those peak performances again come a challenging encounter in the second round.
Sabalenka v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
This could be a tough one to call despite the difference between their rankings. Sabalenka might be ranked fifth but Samsonova enters the season on the back of a very good previous year in which she won three titles. A three-setter can be expected.
