Karolina Muchova v Rebeka Masarova Head to Head

26-year-old Karolina Muchova has not played Rebeka Masarova, who is three years her junior, at any level.

Muchova Takes Positive Steps On Return

Czech tennis looked to be in safe hands with the emergence of Karolina Muchova 18 months ago. She peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 19 in May 2021, before injuries wreaked havoc on her development.

Muchova was troubled by abdominal and ankle injuries in 2022 and only played 23 matches throughout the season. As a result of her career-best season in 2021, she lost many points last year for missing out on the competition.

She entered the main draw in Auckland with a protected ranking, and gave us a dose of what we missed during 2022. Muchova came through her opener after opponent Xiyu Wang retired while the Czech led 5-3.

Then in the second round, she was in full-flight mode as she brushed aside Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4 6-1 in an hour and 23 minutes.

One break of serve was enough to clinch a tight opening set, before Muchova ran away with the match as the Romanian struggled to get any sort of rhythm on serve in the second set.

Masarova Extends Auckland Stay

Rebeka Masarova earned her first Top 50 win in seven years with her first-round upset of Sloane Stephens. And if we thought she was going to be content with that stat, we were wrong.

Masarova went on to defeat Cluj-Napoca champion Anna Blinkova 6-1 6-4 on Thursday to reach her first WTA quarterfinal since Gstaad in 2017. Despite a change in playing conditions due to rain, Masarova still had the edge over her Russian opponent.

Masarova outsmarted the hard-hitting Blinkova with a dazzling display behind her serve. The Spaniard used it as a weapon to earn points with ease and set her up with time and space to hit winners off either wing.

Overall, the World No. 130 tallied 10 aces, and won 79% first-serve points to keep run from qualifying to go for at least one more round.

Muchova v Masarova Prediction and Tip

This should be the ultimate test for Masarova so far. Having added Blinkova to her portfolio of upsets, her confidence will be through the roof. But Muchova has surprisingly not lost a step since coming back from injuries. Expect the vibrant Czech to put the exclamation point on the qualifier’s run.
