Noskova on a Roll

Linda Noskova made her top 100 debut last year; now, she is set to go even further up.

Starting as a qualifier in the Adelaide 500, she first moved past the seeded players like Anna Kalinskaya and Anastasia Potapova to reach the main draw.

In the opener, she stunned the third-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3. After registering her second top-10 career win, she knocked out Claire Liu with a routine 6-2, 6-2 win.

Next up was the former world number one Victoria Azarenka. In that match, the youngster was truly tested. In that three-hour, rally-heavy affair, Linda saved a match point in the final set to win 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(6).

Azarenka dished 15 aces and had a slightly better service game, but Noskova’s perseverance and agility got her through. The challenge for her is to keep this same rhythm against Jabeur.

There are plenty of precedents for the 18-year-old to follow, so it is not impossible for her to beat the Tunisian. Moreover, she has some experience to tap into from her last year’s two singles titles and three doubles finals on the ITF Tour.

Business as Usual for Jabeur

Top seed Ons Jabeur has enjoyed a path of least resistance to the semifinal in Auckland. Enjoying a bye into round two, the 7-6(3), 6-1 win over Sorana Cirstea was followed by the 7-6(5), 7-5 victory against Marta Kostyuk.

Now ranked World No. 2, the 28-year-old enjoyed a wonderful season last year and hopes to keep the same tempo in 2023.

Among her highlights are finals from two Grand Slams (Wimbledon and US Open), two WTA 1000 events  (Madrid and Rome), and two WTA 500 events (Charleston and Berlin). In the process, Jabeur registered many wins against several big players on tour.

Ons ended the year with the WTA Finals but couldn’t make it past the group stage.

Nonetheless, with her experience and pedigree, she is the clear favourite heading into this match.

Jabeur v Noskova Prediction and Tip

This will be an exciting affair. Jabeur is the odds-on favourite, but Noskova has got what it takes to carve the upset – thus, at the very least, putting three sets on the cards. In fact, at 11/5 to win, Noskova certainly makes for an appealing pick.
