Dan Evans v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The only previous time they met was at the 2020 Australian Open where Evans won their first round encounter in five sets.

Evans 1-2 at the United Cup

Playing in three singles matches at the United Cup last week, Evans scraped through to a win and two defeats in them.

Having looked like he has been off-colour for a while now, Evans’ only win was a scratchy one against Albert Ramos-Vinolas while he fell to Jason Kubler and Frances Tiafoe in the other two matches.

Evans had entered the season having not had too many solid results to boot. In fact, other than making it as far as the semifinal at the Rogers Cup, Evans did not win too many rounds at any other tournament.

He will hope he can push his memories from the United Cup behind him as he looks to fine-tune his performance in the lead-up to the Australian Open.

McDonald Sent Packing in Adelaide

He did manage to make it to the second round of the Adelaide International last week but McDonald’s journey did not last too long after that. He was bundled out in straight sets by Yoshihito Nishioka in the round of 16.

And that was after McDonald had been given the bonus of making it to the second round when Daniel Elahi Galan retired from their opening contest because of fitness concerns.

McDonald enters this season on the back of a lacklustre 2022 where he was 48th in the world at one stage before he fell down to 86th. He had ended the season at the 63rd spot after solid showings at Florence and Napoli.

Can he pick things up from there and make the second round here at the expense of the bookmakers’-backed Evans though?

Evans v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Evans will be a favourite here as and should progress to the second round. The question though is if he can do it in straight sets or will he be tested by his opponent?
