Brooksby Starts 2023 Campaign

Jenson Brooksby must feel in unfamiliar surroundings playing in Auckland for the first time. In fact, it is beyond his tournament debut.

Since turning pro, Brooksby hasn’t played Tour-level tennis in Australia or New Zealand. So this will be a trip unlike any other. And the big question we may ask is, will the new territory bring the best out of Jenson Brooksby?

His sizzling run on the Challenger Tour in 2021 earned him a lot of recognition from his peers and the tennis fraternity. Brooksby bagged three titles at that level and was destined to challenge the ATP’s best. The American made his first ATP final in Newport, losing to Kevin Anderson, and advanced to the last four of the ATP tournaments in Washington and Antwerp.

Having started 2021 outside the world’s Top 300, he made a jaw-dropping climb to the world’s Top 60 by the year’s end.

Brooksby was expected to build on his breakthrough year on the ATP Tour, but had a disappointing campaign by his own high standards last term. After inching closer to entering the world’s top 30, four successive defeats towards the end of the season saw him finish 48th in the world.

Fognini Set for Sixth Main Draw In Auckland

Unlike Brooksby, Fabio Fognini will in a familiar ecosystem in Auckland. The Italian has been to Auckland five times before this year, making the quarterfinals twice and reaching the Round of 16 during the last staging of the event in 2020 before the pandemic.

For the third straight year, Fognini finished a season with a negative win-loss record, going 19-24 in 2022. Semifinal finishes in Rio and the Belgrade Open proved to be the best results of an otherwise subpar campaign for the mercurial Italian.

His record on hards wasn’t up to scratch either, compiling a 10-9 win-loss stat. The 35-year-old shut down his season following a 6-0 7-5 loss to Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of the Paris Masters.

2023 will be Fognini’s 19th season at pro level.

Brooksby v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Fognini is a slow starter and in recent years, hasn’t particularly found his range at these tune-up tournaments. Brooksby should get the better of the Italian.
