Richard Gasquet has won a single match this year so this is a nice chance for him to get that first win. The opponent is one that he should comfortably beat so he can ease himself into it. The veteran has seen his best day pass but he’s still capable of some very good tennis as his 34-25 record shows.
Gasquet plays very similarly to the way he played earlier in his career. There is a lot of patience but also a lot of reliance on his serve which is better than it used to be.
The backhand is as crisp as always and it results in a good mix of offence and defence.
He’s still capable of beating good players but he’s unlikely to defeat some of the best. He showed great promise in his matchup against Giron in Adelaide last week but saw himself beaten.
That level will get him the win against Pannu though.

First Match For Pannu
Pannu hasn’t played a single match this year and this will be his first. The native player is a solid player but he doesn’t play on this level and probably doesn’t have the level needed to play on this level. The ITF one is rather good for him as he posted a 50-26 record last year.
It will be interesting to observe what he can do against Gasquet but his best bet is to be aggressive. If he pushes Gasquet just enough he might see his game drop off a cliff which is one way to beat him.
You can’t allow him to dictate the match with his own tempo because he’ll take your game apart.
Pannu most likely won’t win this match but he can leave a good impression on his native fans so will certainly have his back.
