Petra Kvitova v Elena Rybakina
A very interesting round-one matchup awaits us in Adelaide as Petra Kvitova takes on Elena Rybakina.
Both of these players were in action last week but they played in different competitions. Petra Kvitova played at the United Cup and won both matches with Rybakina playing in Adelaide and winning one and losing the other match.
They played only once before and Rybakina won that match last year in Ostrava in straight sets. Having played in Adelaide the previous week, Rybakina will be more used to the conditions which could prove decisive even though Kvitova looked better tennis-wise.
Both should be motivated, especially Kvitova after a rather lacklustre year in 2022. Rybakina won Wimbledon so she was much more relaxed coming into this year. Matchup-wise it’s Rybakina’s to lose and we do think that she’ll pull through.

Sloane Stephens – Lauren Davis
Two Americans will face off against each other in the first round of the Hobart tennis event and it should be an exciting affair. Davis was in action in Adelaide last week and won a match in the singles draw losing the other. She added two more wins in the qualifying here which should suit her well moving forward.
Stephens also played in Adelaide but she lost straight away to Masarova and did not play any more matches. It’s clear that Davis will have some slight advantage having played more tennis this year and having played this week in Hobart.
Their H2H favours neither as both won two matches however most of those are quite old. They haven’t played since 2015 and it’s not very useful to look at what happened there. This match will most likely be quite close and competitive so three sets look likely.

Marie Bouzkova v Jacqueline Cristian
Marie Bouzkova is the top seed in Hobart and she’ll have a pretty decent chance of going all the way due to the draw not being the strongest. She’s certainly proved in the past that she can do it but it will largely depend on how she hits the ball.
She’s a rather clean hitter but mostly allows players to take the initiative. Cristian likes to attack and will most likely the ball harder in this one but her balls can also sail rather wide. They played twice in the best but both matches are quite old.
She improved dramatically since then so she will be favoured to take this one as well. Both played last week and have one win and one loss. The safer pick here is that Bouzkova will win and she’ll most likely win in two sets.
