Liudmilla Samsonova started her season at the Adelaide tennis event last week and now we’ll look to add some more wins at the second one a week later. She started off with a win over Shuai Zhang and it was a nice comeback win for her.
The second match was against Aryna Sabalenka and she wasn’t able to win that one as the Belarusian proved better. Samsonova is a strong player but a lot of it depends on how she plays on the day. Her consistency is all over the place and doesn’t really exist at this stage of her career.
She’s got a good serve and hits the ball really hard but she can be all over the place with the ball.
Now coming up against a lucky loser, one would have thought that Samsonova has a better chance but in Anisimova she has a formidable opponent who could make life on court very difficult for the Russian.

Anisimova Enters as a Lucky Loser
It has been a slow start to the season for the 23rd-ranked Anisimova.
The American had won just three games in the first match she played at the Adelaide International last week, going down to Veronika Kudermetova in the opener there.
This week in Adelaide, Anisimova sent Taylor Townsend out in the first qualifier but not before she had dropped a set to the fellow American. And then in the second round, Anisimova fell in three sets to Jil Teichmann despite starting out a 1/2 favourite.
Fortunately for Anisimova, the number of withdrawals from the tournament has opened up a spot in the competition but the bigger question is if she has the quality and form to get past Samsonova.
