Ostapenko Knocked Out in Second Round Last Week
Ostapenko had a very solid last season having ended the year with a finals appearance at the Korea Open and then with a third round showing at Guadalajara. She won 34 and lost just 19 of the matches she had participated in.
Which is why it was bit of a surprise when the Latvian player started off a second favourite against the struggling Karolina Pliskova in the Adelaide International opener last week.
Defying the bookmakers, Ostapenko dropped just four games on her way to a win over the former world number one.
In the second round though, where Ostapenko was 11/25 to defeat Irina Begu, she won just three games. This consistency issue has often rocked Ostapenko and was on display yet again last week.
Which is why she might be playing a qualifier in the form of Kalinskaya here, we might have to be a tad wary before calling her a sure-shot for a win.

Kalinskaya Stuns Riske to Make Main Draw
Sure, she had gone into her second qualifying round as a favourite but Kalinskaya would have known that Alison Riske is a player to reckon. After all it was in Nottingham last year that Riske had made the final and was also a runner-up at this very tournament in January 2022 too.
That Kalinskaya cruised to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Riske bears ample testimony to the kind of improvement that Kalinskaya has shown over the last couple of years.
As recently as in October 2021, Kalinskaya was not even in the top 150 of the WTA Rankings. Less than 15 months on, she is on the verge of breaking through to the top 50, and a deep run here will go a long way in helping her realise that goal.
Ostapenko is a tough opponent most times though and despite her stumble against Begu last week, Kalinskaya will know she has a mountain to climb to get past her.
Ostapenko v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip
Interesting to note here that neither player start off as a favourite here. If anything some of the bookmakers have Kalinskaya starting off with the edge, with bet365 offering 4/5 for her win. Ostapenko is far too good a player to be ignored at 1/1 we feel.
