Rublev Starts off Poorly in Adelaide

Rublev is one of only two players from the top 11 on the ATP Rankings to be playing this week, less than five days before the start of the Australian Open.

And that is not as surprising as it first sounds given how he was knocked out of the Adelaide competition last week. The Russian lost his first round match to Roberto Bautista Agut after pocketing the first set, a result that wouldn’t have gone down too well for him.

Interestingly, Rublev had earlier participated in the pre-season exhibition tournaments – taking part in the Diriyah Tennis Cup and at one in Abu Dhabi too.

At the former, he had fallen to Stan Wawrinka while at the latter, Rublev defeated Borna Coric and Carlos Alcaraz before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Can he get going with his maiden win in 2023?

Kokkinakis Scrapes Past Popyrin

Things looked to be going his way in his opening round encounter here against fellow Aussie Alexei Popyrin but a mid-match stumble meant Kokkinakis was stretched to a three-setter.

Kokkinakis was on court for two hours and 47 minutes despite having bagelled his opponent in the first set. In fact things could have gotten a lot worse when Kokkinakis dropped his serve in the very first game of the decider and was 3-1 down at one stage.

He showed great resolve in clawing back from there though. The Aussie overcame a game-point in the sixth game before breaking his opponent, and then broke him again in the 12th game of the set.

This was after Kokkinakis had missed a match-point on Popyrin’s serve earlier in the set too.

Can he take this fight to Rublev though?

Rublev v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

Rublev should not have a lot of worries here despite his opening loss at this venue last week. Expecting a straight set win for the Russian here.
