Bencic Beats Muguruza in Blockbuster Opener
In one of the most intriguing first-round matchups we will see at the WTA 500 level, Swiss Olympic Gold Medalist Belinda Bencic defeated two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-4 to book her spot in the second round of the Adelaide International 2.
Bencic who is coming off a modest United Cup campaign (1-1), was too strong for her Spanish opponent who is still chasing her first win of 2023.
The Swiss had the bigger and more efficient serve in a one-sided contest that lasted for an hour and 20 minutes. Muguruza just could not get a look in behind the return. She did not create a single break-point opportunity in the match.
It was Bencic who made a quick start, jumping to a 3-0 lead with a break of serve. And by the time Muguruza got on the board, the Swiss was well ahead. She wrapped up the first set with six aces and dropped just four points behind her first serve.
In the second set, Muguruza kept things watertight, running Bencic close up to 4-4. But the Swiss made her first move in the ninth game, taking the decisive break before serving her way into the second round.

Kalinsakaya Ousts Ostapenko
Anna Kalinskaya proved her participation in the main draw in Adelaide 2 is no fluke. After knocking off Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Alison Riske in the qualifying rounds, the Russian made it three in three with a comfortable straight-sets win over Jelena Ostapenko on Court 2.
Kalinsakya who is hot on the heels of entering the world’s Top 50 this season, produced some superb ball striking and took advantage of Ostapenko’s error-strewn baseline game to win 6-3 6-4 in 80 minutes.
Both players took some time to settle, with two breaks apiece in the first six games. But it was the Russian who sorted her serving yips quicker and after holding to love for 5-3, broke Ostapenko to love to bag the opening set.
Unforced errors and some untimely double faults continued to drain out of the Latvian’s racket in the second. She was broken twice in the second set to hand the match on the silver platter to the qualifier.
Bencic v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip
Kalinskaya will have a great season in 2023 and Top 50 place is on the cards in the first quarter of this year. But her performance against Ostapenko (albeit she got the win in the end) was hardly inspiring. Her first serve barely even moved beyond the 56% mark and she was broken three times. Bencic, by contrast, produced a phenomenal serving display on Monday. The Swiss should in all probability move on.
