Haddad Maia Wears Down Anisimova
It took Haddad Maia nearly two hours in the end but she managed to outplay lucky loser Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the competition.
The Brazilian number one won 6-4, 7-5 to march into the last eight, having also won her opener against Sorana Cirstea. In fact this was her fourth successive victory of the season having had no difficulties in her United Cup singles matches either.
Haddad Maia needed just one break of serve in the first while saving her only break-point as she served for the opening set.
In the second, the two players traded breaks of serves in the first two games but then held on to their serves throughout, wasting nine break-points in total between them.
It was off the 10th that Haddad Maia broke Anisimova again and then served out the match to enter the quarterfinals. A fifth win in a row beckons.

Badosa Continues to Impress
For the third match in a row this season, Badosa came away a winner. This time around it was against Kaia Kanepi, a lucky loser ranked 32nd in the world.
Badosa, who had eased past Anett Kontaveit in the first round, put up a strong display to crunch out a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Kanepi. The match lasted an hour and 24 minutes.
The two players exchanged service breaks early in the opening set but once Badosa had settled down, she ran through the next four games in a row to win the opener in 34 minutes. It was in the second set that Badosa had to dig deeper, as both players hung on to their serves till the eighth game.
At 4-4, Badosa broke Kanepi but failed to serve out the match. She got another chance in the 12th game after breaking her Estonian opponent and this time around won it to 15 to clinch a quarterfinal berth.
Come the last eight stage, things could get slightly tougher but truth be told, Badosa’s first two opponents have been tricky in their own right and the ease with which she has managed to make it past them should give her a lot of confidence.
