Andrey Rublev v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Rublev leads 4-2 on head to head.

Thiem had won their first two matches, in Vienna in 2017 and Monte Carlo in 2018 but since then, in the four meetings they have had, Rublev has won every single time. The last time they played was last year in Gijon and Rublev clinched a place in the final with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Rublev Starts the Season off with Successive Shockers

With Russia not allowed to participate in the United Cup, Rublev opted to feature in both the ATP tournaments held in Adelaide this year as a tune-up for the Australian Open. And that did not go too well for the world number six.

Rublev started off by winning the opening set in the first round of the Adelaide International 1 against Roberto Bautista-Agut but that was followed by a crash in fortunes. He lost the next two to bow out of that competition.

Opting to play again in Adelaide the following week, things got no better for Rublev as he crashed to another three-set defeat. In fact, this time around the defeat came at the hands of Thanasi Kokkinakis who is currently 110th in the world and has never done better than his 69th in the world.

As a result of those results, what Rublev would have wanted in this opening round at the season’s first Grand Slam is a bit of an easy start. What he’s got is a former Grand Slam winner in front of him who might not have been winning too much but is still bit of a handful.

Thiem Yet to Play a Main Draw Match in 2023

While Rublev’s fortunes have been bad enough in the first couple of weeks of this season, Thiem’s appear to be going nowhere too.

The former world number three and US Open winner has featured in only one match in 2023 and that came in the qualifiers of the Adelaide International. He lost that one to Soon-woo Kwon, and he did that in straight sets.

Thiem had shown some signs of resurrection late last season when he made back to back semifinals in Gijon and Antwerp but that hasn’t quite translated into anything substantial this season.

Thiem had featured in a couple of pre-season exhibition matches too which he lost – to Alexander Zverev, who was himself coming off a long layoff and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The question now is whether Thiem can put up any sort of a fight here against Rublev.

Rublev v Thiem Prediction and Tip

This is an interesting one between a player who has started the season off woefully and another player who has not had a lot going since returning from an injury. Rublev should win this but might drop a set on his way.
