Matteo Berrettini v Andy Murray Head to Head
Berrettini leads the rivalry 3-1. Murray’s win came in their first meeting in Beijing in 2019. Since then the Italian has dominated the rivalry.
Berrettini beat Murray twice in 2022. One of those wins came on grass in the final of the Stuttgart Open and the other was a second round win at the U.S. Open.

Berrettini Was a Semifinalist in 2022
He has had a mixed start to 2023, but last year’s semifinalist Matteo Berrettini will be a player to watch out for in this year’s Australian Open.
The 26-year-old Italian, whose best at a Grand Slam was a runner-up finish in Wimbledon two years ago, is making his sixth appearance in the Melbourne slam. He comes into the first major of the year with a 3-2 record in 2023, having played an important role in Italy’s run to the final of the United Cup.
Berrettini won his first three singles matches at the United Cup, beating Thiago Monteiro, Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz. But he failed to deliver victories in the semifinal and final ties. He lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Italy’s semifinal against Greece and was edged out by Taylor Fritz in their singles rubber in the final.
The world no. 14 is coming off a stop-start 2022 season. After reaching the final four in the first major, he saw a slight dip in form and then a hand injury sidelined him from almost the entire clay season.
He made an emphatic return on grass, winning two titles before COVID forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon. He ended the season well reaching two more finals in the year and also the last eight at the U.S. Open.
A seven-time champion on the tour from 12 finals, Berrettini has found more success on clay and grass than on hard. He reached his first ever final on hard court in Naples last year, finishing runner=up to Lorenzo Musetti.
He faces an extremely tough opponent in the first round, but given his recent dominance over the Scot, he will back himself to advance to the next round.

Murray is a Five-Time Finalist
He may not have achieved a lot since undergoing the hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019, but the 35-year-old Andy Murray has looked in good shape in recent months and will be eager to once again go deep in a Grand Slam tournament.
While that seems an uphill task for someone who hasn’t been as threatening as he used to be before the surgeries, his past record in the tournament is brilliant and that experience can prove to be vital for him as he chases his fourth major title.
In all, he has featured in nine Grand Slam finals over his career, and five of those have come in Melbourne. But unfortunately for him, he finished second in all of those finals.
Injuries have affected his game big time, but last year he showed glimpses of his old self, reaching two finals in Sydney and Stuttgart. While he couldn’t add to the 46 titles he has won over his career, he would be delighted to have featured in summit clashes after a gap of two years.
Murray has not started 2023 well, losing his opening round match in Adelaide-1 to Sebastian Korda. Can he get a first tour-level win of the year on Monday?
Last year, he won the first round to win his first match at the Australian Open in five years, but went down to Taro Daniel in the second round. He is coming to Melbourne in better shape, health-wise, can the world no. 49 make a good start?
Berrettini v Murray Prediction and Tip
