Frances Tiafoe v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the two.

Tiafoe High on Confidence

Riding high on Team United States’ triumph at the United Cup, Frances Tiafoe will bring a lot of confidence into the first major of the season.

The world no. 17 himself played a huge role in his country’s success at the mixed-gender tournament, winning all five of his singles matches and also the only mixed doubles match that he featured in. So he is undefeated this year and will be hoping to carry the momentum to Melbourne.

His five wins in singles came over Tomas Machac, Oscar Otte, Daniel Evans, Kacper Zuk and Lorenzo Musetti. The first and the last were achieved after his opponents retired but he had taken the first set in both those matches.

This will be the American’s seventh main draw appearance at the Australian Open. His best in the tournament saw him reach the last eight in 2019. He has however failed to go past the second round in the other editions. Last year, he went down to compatriot Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the Round of 64.

He was slow off the blocks in 2022, but found some form in Estoril, where he finished runner-up and then raised his level in the back end of the tournament. He reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the U.S. Open and made it to another final in Tokyo, but failed to add to the Delray Beach title he won in 2018.

The 24-year-old’s strong 36-25 season saw him clim the rankings and break into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

It will be interesting to see how long can he keep the perfect run going this year?

Altmaier Struggled on Tour in 2022

Facing Tiafoe is World no. 91 Daniel Altmaier, who will be playing his first main draw match of the season in the first round.

Altmaier attempted to qualify for the main draw in Auckland, but was knocked out by Thiago Monteiro in a three-set first qualifying round.

The 24-year-old German will be making his second appearance in Melbourne. Last year, Altmaier lost in the first round to Alexander Zverev on his Australian Open debut.

Overall, Altmaier finished with a 5-21 tour-level record in 2022. But while he struggled to make an impression at the top level, he found success on the Challenger Tour. Altmaier featured in four Challenger finals, winning all three of the clay court finals, but finishing runner-up on hard court in Phoenix.

Given his poor run for most parts of the season, he had fallen out of the top 100, but thanks to a strong finish (he won two Challenger titles and finished as a semifinalist in one to end 2022 with a 13-1 record from last 14 matches), he broke back into the top 100.

Playing an in-form Tiafoe may be a tough ask for him in the opener, but he will hope to put up a fight and make an impression.

Tiafoe v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is the overwhelming favourite in this contest. He is a better player and in extremely good form at the moment. Chances of an upset are very bleak.
