Nick Kyrgios v Roman Safiullin Head to Head
Nick Kyrgios and Roman Safiullin have not played each other at any level.

Kyrgios in a Race Against Time to be Fit
Australia’s top-ranked player Nick Kyrgios hasn’t played competitively since October last year. The 27-year-old is in a race against time to be fit for the year’s first Major after battling an ankle injury in the build-up to the Australian Open.
The number 19 seed was forced to pull out from tune-up events at the turn of the year. Kyrgios withdrew from Australia’s United Cup team in the 11th hour and also pulled out from Adelaide due to the injury.
It’ll be interesting to see whether the mercurial Aussie is match fit in his opening match against the dangerous Roman Safiullin.
Kyrgios played the best season of his career last year reaching the final of Wimbledon for the first time in his career and only losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.
As fate would have it, he is slated to meet Djokovic in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park this time but before he can contemplate that potential collision, he will need to get through the opening week unscathed.

Is Safiullin on the Verge of a Grand Slam Breakthrough?
Roman Safiullin has only played 28 matches at Tour level in his career, winning 13 times. That is not the sort of blueprint he needs heading to the year’s first Grand Slam with a dream of taking down Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in his home country.
But Safiullin is actually a very astute baseliner and has enjoyed the bulk of his success on the ATP Challenger Tour where he has won three titles.
Safiullin has beaten a Top 10 player before (Stefanos Tsitsipas in Marseille in his run to the semifinals last season) and is a big ball striker.
He started the year on a winning note, qualifying for Adelaide 1 where he lost in the second round to Denis Shapolov.
Kyrgios v Safiullin Prediction and Tip
A lot of people have written off Safiullin’s chances here, but he is not playing a fit Nick Kyrgios. If anything he could actually take it to Kyrgios and force the Aussie to play his best tennis right out of the gate.
Kyrgios can have his own struggles and tantrums in first-round matches. Last year he struggled to put away British wild card Paul Jubb at Wimbledon, and we reckon the Russian is good value to stretch the home favorite.
