Grigor Dimitrov v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head
It’s 1-1 from their two meetings. Karatsev won in the Australian Open quarterfinal in 2021, while Dimitrov won in San Diego quarterfinal the same year.

Dimitrov Was a Semifinalist in 2017
Grigor Dimitrov will be playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the 13th time. A three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, the Bulgarian was in the final four in Melbourne in 2017 but was stopped from reaching the final by Rafael Nadal.
In addition to that run to the semifinals, Dimitrov has also had three quarterfinal finishes in 2014, 2018 and 2021. The last one was a fixture agains Karatsev. But a severe back pain hampered his movement and he went down to the Russian in four sets.
Dimitrov, who became only the second man born in 90s and after to win 350 tour-level matches last year, is coming off a decent season.
He still hasn’t won a title since winning his eighth at the ATP Finals in 2017 and not reached a final, since featuring in a 15th final in Rotterdam in 2018. However, he finished 2022 with a 27-22 record, which included three semifinals. One of those was at a Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo.
This year, the Bulgarian is 1-1 from his two singles matches at the United Cup. He suffered a tough three-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas against Greece, but won in straight sets against Belgium’s David Goffin. How far can he go in the Australian Open? If everything goes to plan, he is on collision course with Novak Djokovic and that third round fixture could be his last act in this year’s tournament.

Karatsev Looking to Recapture the Form of 2021
In 2022, Aslan Karatsev couldn’t even come close to what he achieved in 2021, so the Russian will look to quickly wipe off the memories of last season and start afresh in 2023.
He is off to a good start this year, having reached the semifinals of the Maharashtra Open in his season opener. He defeated Pablo Andujar and Tim Van Rijthoven in the first two rounds and then raced past Pedro Martinez in the quarterfinal to reach the final four without dropping a set. However that winning streak ended with a straight sets defeat to eventual champion Tallon Griekspoor.
Despite the semifinal exit, the world no. 52 will be happy with the start he has got. But last year, too, he was off to wonderful start, winning the title in Sydney, before losing form completely and eventually ending the season with a 17-29 tour-level record.
It was a below par season for the 29-year-old, who shot to fame in 2021, by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open on his Grand Slam debut and then reaching his first three ATP finals and winning two of them.
He was one of the most improved players on the tour two years ago and there were huge expectations from him in 2022, but he couldn’t match his 2021 exploits last year. It will be interesting to see how he goes about his business this season. He’s got the start that he would have liked. Now can he build from there on?
Dimitrov v Karatsev Prediction and Tip
Dimitrov was consistent throughout last year and he did play well in the United Cup, while Karatsev is coming off a tough season. So Dimitrov is the favourite. However, Karatsev has shown a liking for Australia over the last two years and one can expect him to put up a fight.
This will be one of the top matches of the first round, which may go the distance with Dimitrov edging past the Russian.
