Collins Finding Her Feet for the Season

She was the runner-up at the Australian Open last season but it has been bit of a slow start for Collins this year. That can be put down to the reduced amount of tennis that Collins played last season despite making that kind of an impression early in 2022.

Collins started off with first round debacle against Elena Rybakina in Adelaide, losing her opener after having taken a one set lead there.

The good news for Collins was she managed to put that defeat behind her in the second tournament in Adelaide, crushing the former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the first round there.

She followed it up with a straight-set drubbing of Jil Teichmann before Veronika Kudermetova needed to fight hard to get past Collins in the quarterfinal.

What these results are an indicator is Collins is slowly coming into her own and while a repeat of a runner-up trophy is still some way off, she can be expected to go deep again with some luck.

Kalinskaya Starts off with Mixed Results

Kalinskaya would have been expected to do a lot better than her result at the Adelaide International 1 in week one of the season, with the Russian losing her first qualifier to Linda Noskova.

She followed that up with a couple of good qualifying wins in the Adelaide International 2 to make the main draw. And when Kalinskaya sent Jelena Ostapenko packing in the first round there, things were looking good for the world number 64.

Unfortunately for Kalinskaya, her game hasn’t evolved to the extent that she starts defeating in-form top 20 players regularly and Belinda Bencic took full advantage of that. A straight-set second round loss to the Swiss number one followed.

The good news for Kalinskaya is she can be expected to break into the top 60 of the rankings again next week.

The not so good news is that after having never made it past the first round at this tournament, Kalinskaya could find it extremely tough to do that here too, facing the previous year’s runner-up.

Collins v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Collins should win this but with some difficulty by the looks of things. Might even see a three-setter here.
