Daniil Medvedev v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Cincinnati Masters which was held in New York and Medvedev had won 6-4, 6-4.

Medvedev Makes Strong Start to the Season

Sure, Medvedev lost in the semifinal at the Adelaide International in the first week of the new season but that defeat came at the hands of Novak Djokovic. Before getting to that stage, the Russian looked to have had a good run.

He started off with a victory against Lorenzo Sonego who had to retire from their opening round encounter. Medvedev followed that up with another straight-set win over Miomir Kecmanovic before turning on the screws against Karen Khachanov.

That is good news for a player who looked to have started the previous season rather well but fallen away a little by his own spectacular standards.

That defeat in the final of this tournament looked to have hurt Medvedev like no other but this is a new year and he did mention he will want to move further on from that stunning loss against Rafael Nadal.

Can he start things off with a strong showing?

Giron 3-2 This Season So Far

While he hasn’t been as good as Medvedev this year, Giron sure has made a couple of decent advancements in the tournaments he has participated in.

At the first, in Adelaide, Giron surprised Richard Gasquet in a hard-fought opener before losing to Alexei Popyrin from being a set up.

Giron then went to Auckland to feature in his second tournament of the season and wins over Federico Coria and JJ Wolf took him a round further. What looked to be even more impressive was his fighting effort in his loss to Cameron Norrie in the last eight stage.

As a result of that run, Giron will enter the Australian Open ranked 55th in the world, not too far from his career-best ranking of 49th. Unfortunately for him, with the kind of performances on show from the Medvedev racquet this season it looks unlikely he will be able to test the Russian too much.

Medvedev v Giron Prediction and Tip

Medvedev should have no worries here but at the same time Giron’s fighting capabilities will make things spicier than a straightforward three-setter. The Russian also hit on an average 10 aces per match in hardcourt competitions in 2022 but that’s in best of three encounters. In a best of five match, he could get close to 20 against someone like Giron.
