Kaia Kanepi v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head

Kanepi won their only meeting in a qualifying round in Brisbane in 2018.

Kanepi Was a Quarterfinalist Last Year

Last year Kaia Kanepi stunned the world as she reached her first ever Australian Open quarterfinal at the age of 36. It was her 13th appearance in the Melbourne major and the Estonian veteran put up a power packed performance defeating Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka en route the last eight. However, she could not keep the run going as she went down fighting to Iga Swiatek in a three-set thriller.

It was Kanepi’s seventh quarterfinal at a major but she failed to make it to her first ever semifinal.

Can she do it this year? It’s tough but Kanepi is coming off a strong season, in which she also reached the final in Washington and the semifinal in Tallinn. In all, she went 29-19 in 2022.

This year, Kanepi won one and lost one in Adelaide-1 and then featured in the main draw of Adelaide-2 as a lucky loser. She ousted Storm Sanders in the first round but went down to Paula Badosa in the next.

So it’s been an up and down start to the year for the 37-year-old, who is rankled no. 32 in the world. Can she find some consistency in the first major?

Birrell Received a Wild Card

Australia’s Kimberly Birrell has been given a wild card for the tournament.

This will be her third appearance in the tournament. The 24-year-old, who is yet to break into the top 150 in the world, made it to the third round in 2019, but was beaten in the first rounds in 2017 and 2021.

Birrell played in the qualifying rounds in Adelaide this year, winning the first one against Ana Bogdan but falling to Shelby Rogers in the next.

Currently ranked no. 166, she won her third ITF title last year and also reached two other finals. The 41-25 2022 was a much better season for the Aussie, who had struggled with form in the previous year and played just 11 matches in all.

With the home fans supporting, Birrell would look to give her best in her home slam. She may not win but she will look to give the crowds something to cheer.

Kanepi v Birrell Prediction and Tip

Kanepi is the favourite in this match. She is a veteran, far more experienced than her opponent and is coming off a strong season. Expect the Estonian to win the opener.
