Solid 3-2 Start for Kecmanovic

Miomir Kecmanovic arrived in Melbourne with 5 matches played and a solid score of 3-2. He could have certainly done better but his defeats weren’t that bad.

One came to Daniil Medvedev which is expected with the other coming to Thanasi Kokkinakis who was playing his home event and he played it well. The Serbian is certainly not on the same level as last year at this time when he made a deep run at the Australian Open but he’s certainly good enough to make the second round.

The conditions should be favourable for him as they were last year. He grew up playing on courts like this as a college player so serving well and hitting the forehand well is right up his alley.

His all-time record in Melbourne is 4-3 however three of those four wins came last year when he played in the 4th round. It’s widely expected he takes this one but it won’t be as straightforward as many think.

Jarry Qualifies Thanks to Good Play

Nicolas Jarry was never fond of the hard courts but the former top 50 player is certainly capable on them thanks to his serve.

That’s his main weapon and it certainly proved crucial in his qualifiers run where he won all three matches. Quite a few of those sets were pretty close so he needed his serve to pull him out of some tricky situations. He’ll need that against Kecmanovic as well because he didn’t play well here over the years.

In fact, Jarry has no main draw wins at the Australian Open losing twice in the first round and once in the qualifiers. His 3-1 record is fine but Kecmanovic is a far better player than any of the players he faced before him.

It’s hard to see what Jarry can do here other than stay aggressive and hope for his serve to carry him in crucial rallies. It could work but it’s unlikely to work in a bo5 format.

Kecmanovic v Jarry Prediction and Tip

Kecmanovic is the heavy favourite in this one and it’s understandable. A better player and has a far higher comfort level in these conditions. That run last year should also count for something.
