This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Begu Coming off a Great Start
Irina-Camelia Begu is set to start her run in the Australian Open on the back of a superb start to the season. This time, she will hope to make it past round two at least – something that she has achieved just once in the Melbourne major.
She participated in Adelaide International 1 and made it to the semis, beating Shelby Rogers, Jelena Ostapenko, and Veronika Kudermetova en route. Ultimately, she fell to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.
The 32-year-old Romanian, currently ranked World No. 30, was slated to play in the second Adelaide event but withdrew, choosing to focus on the Slam.
Begu had a remarkable spell in 2022, ending at 32-17 – her best result since 2014, when she ended that year 40-21.
She picked up two titles – Open Romania Challenger and WTA and Palermo Ladies Open (both on clay courts) and reached the mid-rounds in two of the four majors. Irina-Camelia was a semifinalist in St. Petersburg and a quarterfinalist in Parma.

Mandlik Gets Lucky
Elizabeth Mandlik, age 21, started in Melbourne as a qualifier. In her first two matches, she beat Sonay Kartal and Mai Hontama but ultimately lost to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
However, Saisai Zheng – Begu’s original opponent – withdrew from the competition on Sunday and thus gave Mandlik a lucky loser ticket into the main draw.
Currently ranked World No. 129, Mandlik participated only in ASB Classic before coming for the Aus Open; she fell in the opening qualifying match to Viktoria Kuzmova.
Looking at her recent form, Elizabeth spent the 2022 tour mainly on the ITF circuit – collecting three titles and one runner-up silverware. In WTA events, her best showing came in San Jose where she reached round two as a qualifier.
Begu v Mandlik Prediction and Tip
Begu should do well to win this one comfortably. Mandlik may put up a fight, but given Begu’s experience, superior form, and momentum, the American faces a near-impossible task of upsetting the 27th seed.
