Anhelina Kalinina v Coco Vandeweghe Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two which came in the Houston Open 2019 and it was Vandeweghe who had clinched a win.

Kalinina Coming off a Quarterfinal in Hobart

While Kalinina crashed out of the Adelaide International in the very first round after having made it there as a qualifier, she did much better in Hobart in the tournament that followed.

Wins over Rebecca Marino and Tatjana Maria took her to the last eight stage of that tournament where she finally met her match against Sofia Kenin.

This comes on the back of a season which saw her improve from being 53rd at one stage to a career-high of 34th. She finally settled in at 39th by the end of the season.

Kalinina has made the second round of Grand Slam events in the past – six times in fact – but never through to the third. To add to that, Kalinina has also never done that in Melbourne. Can she now break that hoodoo?

Vandeweghe Needs Qualifiers to Come Through

Vandeweghe was ranked ninth in the world in 2018. A spate of illnesses and injuries led to a loss of form even when she returned to the sport and that was followed by a fall in the rankings.

Today, she enters the Australian Open ranked 140th in the world with a WTA 125 titles win last season helping her regain some of her form and confidence.

What that might have also helped Vandeweghe do is to get through the qualifiers here, winning the three matches for the loss of one set. While that is the good bit, what would be interesting to see is how she goes up against a player who is showing a lot of promise in the recent past.

Expect the experience to help but that might not be enough.

Kalinina v Vandeweghe Prediction and Tip

Kalinina to win but with Vandeweghe to put up a fight. Might see a three-setter or a tie-breaker in one. Or both.
