Giorgi Returns From Injury

Camila Giorgi is set to make her 11th appearance in the Melbourne major. She has never gone past the round of 32 in the tournament and last year was the fourth time that she made it to the third round before falling to Ash Barty.

Giorgi, who had an up-and-down 2022, had broken into the top 30 following a fourth round finish in Roland Garros and a couple of strong grass court tournaments. But she couldn’t maintain her position in the standings after her season ended abruptly after the U.S. Open due to an injury.

The Italian finished with a 16-16 record last season. She played just one match this year and suffering a qualifying round defeat to Sorana Cîrstea in Adelaide-2.

A three-time winner on the tour from nine finals, she will be hoping to shake off the rust and start afresh in 2023.

Pavlyuchenkova Back After Long Layoff

Hit by a knee injury, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova featured in just three singles and one doubles tournament last year.

While COVID kept her out of the Australian Open warmups, it was the knee injury that forced her to pull out of events following her third round finish at the Australian Open.

The Russian did make a brief return on clay, winning her second WTA 1000 doubles title at the Italian Open with Veronika Kudermetova, but the knee began to trouble her again and she pulled out of the rest of the season.

The 2021 French Open finalist has featured in four Australian Open quarterfinals in 2017, 2019 and 2020. This will be the 15th time that she will be contesting in the Melbourne Slam and hope for a last eight or a better finish again. But her primary objective would be to shake off any rust that settled in after the long layoff.

The 31-year-old competed in Adelaide-2 this year, but fell to Jil Teichmann in the first round. However, she was the doubles finalist in the tournament along with partner Elena Rybakina.

Currently ranked no. 364th in the world, the former no. 11 will also be aiming to climb back the rankings. She faces a difficult first round opponent and the opening round match promises to be a cracking encounter.

Giorgi v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between two players returning from injury. Both had delivered decent results in 2021 and both will be desperate to begin on winning note. Pavlyuchenkova will hold slight edge, given how she has performed in the tournament in the last 15 years. She has been particularly good in Melbourne over the last five years.
