Sebastian Korda v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

While these two haven’t faced off at the highest level before this, there has been one meeting between the two at the Challenger level. It was Watanuki who came away trumps in that match, winning their first round encounter at the Dallas Challenger 6-3, 7-5.

Korda Needs Four against Garin in Opener

Having entered the Australian Open on the back of a solid performance at the Adelaide International, Korda was a huge favourite going up against clay-court specialist Cristian Garin.

Garin, however, did not make things too easy on Korda; not in the first two sets for sure.

In the first, Korda was broken back and it was in the ninth game that he pulled out a decisive break which helped him take the set. The second went worse than expected for the American as he dropped his serve twice to allow Garin to level things out.

An early break in the third for Korda was followed by the American saving six break-points in the third game. Once he had done that, however, Korda managed take control of the encounter as he first wrapped up the set and then broke his opponent twice in the fourth set to clinch the win.

Korda will look at his unforced errors count of 42 as he looks to improve upon his game come the latter rounds.

Watanuki in a Shock Rout of Rinderknech

It took Watanuki all of an hour and 45 minutes to emerge victorious in the first round of the Australian Open as he made it his fourth win in a row. He had earlier come through three qualifying round victories to enter the main draw but in winning his opener, he did that for the first time at a Grand Slam.

Watanuki was 13/10 coming into his opening round match against Arthur Rinderknech but it looked like nobody had read him his script.

Instead, he came up with a performance to remember as he carved out a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Rinderknech to seal off his second round berth. The Japanese player, who was outside the top 300 ranks in 2021 has improved to a career-best of 138th on the back of a Canberra Challenger semifinal earlier this season.

And whether or not he wins this, he can be expected to rise up slightly by the time this tournament has ended.

Korda v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Korda will hope he can put the fight he had on his hands in his opener behind him as he takes on the gritty Watanuke in the second round. Expect him to come through but again, might not be the easiest win he would have against a 138th-ranked player.
