Leylah Fernandez v Alize Cornet Head to Head

They played once and Fernandez won that easily.

2-1 Start for Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez had an interesting start to the season as she posted a 2-1 record so far. She only played one event but showed two very different sides there.

In the first two matches, Fernandez was showing her signature aggressive style that had her forehand wrecking havoc on opposing players. That changed in the 3rd match as she was unable to do much against a player she should have realistically beaten.

That leaves a lot of doubt about her level heading into the Australian Open because she hasn’t shown much consistency since her US Open run.

The conditions here suit her perfectly but she has never advanced to the second round of the event. It’s time but will she get it done remains to be seen. It’s a tricky matchup but also one that she was able to win in their lone clash so that should give her an edge.

Slow Start for Cornet

Alize Cornet was supposed to retire at the end of last year but it seems like her love for tennis prevailed once more. Cornet returns to Australia where she had her best run at a grand slam ever last year. She was just incredible last year losing to Danielle Collins in the quarterfinal.

It’s unlikely she does that again because last year seemed like a magical run and those don’t happen often but also because she faces a player that should beat her comfortably.

Cornet hasn’t played that well to start the year. Her lone win came against a clay specialist with the other two matches’ easy losses.

She battles hard and sends many balls back which might be troublesome for her opponent to overcome but she faces some big problems in this matchup as well.

Fernandez v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Leylah Fernandez won their only meeting and she should win it again. Cornet is known as a giant killer but I just don’t think she’ll do it this time around. Be careful though.
