Riske-Amritraj Looking to Overcome Tough Start

Alison Riske-Amritraj had a decent run in 2022, reaching two finals, but she failed to add to the three titles that she won in previous years.

The American went 24-21 last year with runner-up finishes in Adelaide and Nottingham and also put up a solid display at the U.S. Open and the Miami Open, reaching the fourth round of both the tournaments.

She, however, managed to reach only the second round of the Australian Open. In her 11 main draw appearances at the Melbourne slam, Riske-Amritraj had her best run in 2020 where she made it to the Round of 16. She also made it to the third round on two other occasions.

Riske-Amritraj’s best Grand Slam showing came at Wimbledon in 2019, when she reached the last eight.

Ranked no. 49, the 32-year-old is off to a slow start this year, winning just one of the four matches that she has played and that win came in the qualifying round of Adelaide-2.

After losing in the first qualifying round in Adelaide-1 to Viktorija Golubic, she won her opening qualifying round in Adelaide-2 against Alana Parnaby, but fell in the second qualifying round to Anna Kalinskaya. She played in the main draw as a lucky loser, but went down in the opening round to Barbora Krejčíková.

She will be looking to overcome the tough start with a win on Tuesday and hope to build on that from there.

Vondrousova Off to a Good Start

Facing Riske-Amritraj will be Marketa Vondrousova, who got her 2023 off to a good start at Adelaide International.

Having played very little last year, it was important for Vondrousova to start well and the world no. 86 did get off to a good start, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova and Kaia Kanepi in the first two rounds in Adelaide. She however lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal of the tournament.

She didn’t play in singles in Adelaide-2, but reached the semifinals of the doubles tournament with partner Miriam Kolodziejová.

Last year, she made a decent start to the season, with a run to semifinals in Dubai being her best. But, she didn’t continue after the Stuttgart Open in April due to a wrist injury, which required surgery. She came back in November, winning an ITF event and reaching the quarterfinal of a WTA 125 tournament,

The 2019 French Open finalist has a good record in Grand Slams. This will be the sixth time that she will be competing at the Australian Open. Her best was a fourth round finish in 2021 and she made a third round exit last year.

Having recovered from the injury, the left-hander will look to stay healthy and climb back the rankings this year and will hope to start the climb up in Melbourne.

Riske-Amritraj v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova has beaten a couple of good opponents in Adelaide. She has also been playing a lot since November, albeit at the lower level, and comes into the tournament in decent form. In contrast, Riske-Amritraj is off to a difficult start this season. Expect the Czech player to win and reach the next round.
