Iga Swiatek v Camila Osorio Head to Head

Swiatek Stretched by Niemeier in Opener

There was a cloud over Swiatek’s fitness coming into this tournament and while she did not show any visible concerns, the world number one wasn’t at her fluent best.

In the end, she won her opening round encounter against Jule Niemeier in straight sets but not before her German opponent had made things tricky for her.

Swiatek was on court for a tick over two hours in her 6-4, 7-5 win which saw the Polish player’s serve getting broken once in the match. In fact, at one stage, Niemeier was serving for the second set before Swiatek raised her game and broke back twice.

While Swiatek will be glad to have hit 20 winners in the encounter what would get her goat are the 28 unforced errors that caused her multiple stutters during the encounter.

Up against a player ranked outside the top 80, those might not haunt her too much but for someone who won 70 of the 80 competitive matches she played last season, it’s not a statistic she would like to repeat.

Osorio Opens 2023 with Easy Win

Having fallen to 84th in the world, Osorio opted to directly kick-start her season at the Australian Open instead of featuring in the qualifiers of the first couple of WTA events. And it looks to be a risk that paid off as Osorio cruised to an easy win in her opener.

Osorio, who had never made it past the first round at Australian Open, routed the 89th-ranked Udvardy Panna 6-4, 6-1 to win her first match ever at this tournament. The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes.

The first set went on an even keel with both players dropping their serves once apiece till the eighth game. At 4-4, Osorio held easily and then broke her opponent in the next game to take the lead.

It looked like going to a similar script in the second set too when there was a break of serve apiece in the first three games. From that point on, however, it was Osorio who came through with four straight games, taking her to the second round.

Against Swiatek, Osorio will need a miracle or for her opponent’s fitness issues to resurface because other than that, it seems like a foregone conclusion.

Swiatek v Osorio Prediction and Tip

Swiatek is 1/25 to win this and 2/9 to do that in straight sets. If you are looking for a riskier punt, then you could look at Swiatek to struggle a little yet again in one of the sets.
