Felix Auger-Aliassime v Alex Molcan Head to Head

In their only previous meeting which came at the 2022 Marrakech Open, Molcan had stunned Auger-Aliassime to move into the quarterfinals.

Auger-Aliassime Scrapes Past Pospisil

Vasek Pospisil is a former top 25 player but a consistent lack of results at the highest level has pushed him to 99th in the world. And as a result of that, Auger-Aliassime was expected to make short work of his fellow Canadian in their opener.

As it turned out, Auger-Aliassime was in a strife for a major portion of the first three sets and it was only towards the latter portion of the fourth did his opponent’s resistance finally broke.

Auger-Aliassime, who was knocked out in the first round of the Adelaide International by Alexei Popyrin in his only previous match for the season, needed over four hours to get past Pospisil. He won 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3 to scrape through to the second round.

Having won four titles last season, a better showing was expected out of Auger-Aliassime but his inability to close things out in the second and third set before winning the tie-breakers was a big surprise.

Can he quickly get better before things get really difficult in the tournament?

Molcan Stuns Wawrinka in Opener

A 3/10 favourite to win his opener, Stan Wawrinka fell in a fighting match to Molcan. And with that five-set victory, the clay-court specialist Molcan emulated his best ever showing at this tournament which had come last season.

Molcan, like Auger-Alisssime, was on court for over four hours and came back from two sets to one down to clinch his second round berth.

He won 6-7 (3), 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, surviving nine breaks of serves in the encounter, to go with enduring 16 aces and 67 winners from his opponent’s racquet.

Having come into the tournament with virtually no form under his belt, Molcan wasn’t tipped to even take a set off Wawrinka. A straight-set loss to Laslo Djere in Pune had been followed by a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Quentin Halys in Auckland but a victory over Wawrinka here should give him a major boost for a much sterner second round encounter.

Auger-Aliassime v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime is clearly struggling for form while Molcan has shown fighting capabilities. The Canadian should win it but it might not be a straight-set victory.
