Garcia Brushes Sebov Aside
24-year-old Katherine Sebov has moved up to 190th in the world, her career-best and qualified for this tournament with three successive wins including one against the in-form Linda Noskova.
Against Garcia, she found the going a lot tougher though as the world number four earned the right to make the second round with an easy win over Sebov.
Garcia won 6-3, 6-0 in a mere 66 minutes, with the Frenchman clinching the last nine games in a row; Sebov’s challenge getting extinguished at 3-3 in the first set. Two break-points against Garcia were saved with ease while she broke her opponent four times of the six opportunities she got.
The world number four has featured at the Australian Open 12 times before this and made the fourth round just once. As a world number four, her path through to that round is a lot easier but she now faces a challenging second round opponent.

Fernandez Needs Some Time against Cornet
Fernandez will be facing a Frenchwoman in the second round after having defeat another in her opener.
Unlike Garcia, however, Alize Cornet had come into the tournament on the back of very little form and while Fernandez herself hasn’t had too many results going her way, she was a 3/5 favourite to clinch it.
And while Fernandez won it in straight sets, she needed to overcome a slow start before finding her rhythm in the second.
Fernandez won 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 42 minutes as both broke serve once to take it to 5-5. The Canadian went 6-5 ahead on serve but Cornet then failed to hold her own to give her opponent the set.
In the second, the former world number 13 broke twice to ease to a win and make it to the second round at Australian Open for the first time.
Can she manage the same consistency against Garcia?
Garcia v Fernandez Prediction and Tip
Garcia will not have it easy and while the bookmakers have her at 2/5 to win this, we reckon it could get a lot closer than that. Three sets could also be an option.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Garcia to win: 2/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (Click Here to Bet with 888Sport)
