Aryna Sabalenka v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two and Sabalenka has won both. Both those matches came in 2022, at Cincinnati and Rosmalen.

Sabalenka Tames Tereza in Opener

Tereza Martincova is a tricky opponent when in full flow but that’s not been the case in a while. Which is why Sabalenka was a 1/10 favourite going into their opening round encounter and that’s exactly how the match panned out in the end.

The world number five triumphed 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round, winning it in a mere 70 minutes.

With Sabalenka serving at a mere 56% through the match, it was the other aspects of her game that needed to rise and she carved out 29 winners and three aces in the encounter.

There was one game in the opening set where Sabalenka looked troubled, giving away four break-points. Once she was through that one without getting broken, the Belarusian player faced just one other break-point to seal the deal.

She could face a little more resistance come the second round though against a player who was formerly ranked 30th in the world.

Rogers Beats Qualifier Hartono

Having come into the tournament as a qualifier the 240th-ranked Arianne Hartono wasn’t expected to ruffle a lot of Rogers’ feathers in their opener. In the end, it does look like Rogers came through easily but things could have gotten a lot worse had it not been for Hartono’s stream of unforced errors.

Rogers was broken three times in her 6-4, 6-3 win in her first round match which lasted and hour and 25 minutes. In turn, the American made inroads into her opponent’s serve on six occasions, slamming 23 winners.

The difference between the two players came in their unforced errors count whereby Rogers came away with just 17 and Hartono tripped 27 times.

The American will take this win though, having lost in the first round in both the Adelaide International tournaments played as a tune-up to this opening Grand Slam.

Can she trouble Sabalenka though?

Sabalenka v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka has started off strongly and will hope to continue with the same against a player whose form has been patchy. That said, on her day Rogers can surprise a few and that’s why we could see a bit of a stretch-out from the Belarusian number one.
