Daniel Evans v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head
Evans leads 3-1 on the tour level, but Chardy is 2-0 at the qualifying and Challenger levels. So overall they are 3-3. But Evans has dominated the recent fixtures, winning all three of their most recent matches, which were all played in 2021.

Evans Holds Off Bagnis
Daniel Evans withstood 11 aces from Facundo Bagnis, before defeating the Argentine in a four-set opening round contest.
The Britain, who lost in the third round of the tournament last year, has won the opening round at the Australian Open for the fifth time in his seventh attempt.
He had a tough start to the year, winning just one of his four matches in 2023, but the win over Bagnis will give him a lot of confidence while going into the next round.
In Tuesday’s match, the world no. 30 came back from a break down to take the opening set. He also went a break down early in the second, but recovered again in the middle of the set. However, a second break for Bagnis late in the set tied the match at one-set all.
Evans wasn’t broken again in the match, while he got the solitary breaks in the third and the fourth sets for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. The three-hour-and-29-minute match saw Evans make just 31 unforced errors to Bagnis’ 54. He also converted five of 10 break points and saved three of six that he faced.
The 25th seed will be hoping to carry the momentum into the next round as he eyes a third Round of 32 spot in the Melbourne major.

Chardy Makes a Winning Return
Back after being forced to sit out for one-and-a-half year, Jeremy Chardy made a winning return to down Daniel Elahi Galán in the opening round of the Australian Open.
The 35-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open ten years ago, was outplayed by the Colombian in the first set. But he clawed his way back into the contest scripting a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 victory in three hours and 19 minutes.
Galan, whose preparations were hampered by abdominal injury in Adelaide, didn’t seem to have recovered completely. Both players had plenty of break points in the match. Chardy converted 7 of 17, and saved 21 of 26 to beat the World no. 70.
Chardy is not ranked as injuries kept him away from the game for a long time. But he will be happy to have made a winning return in singles.
Can he get another one on Thursday? Seems unlikely.
Evans v Chardy Prediction and Tip
While Chardy found a way to beat a Galan, who wasn’t 100% fit, he will struggle against Evans. The latter will be happy to have finished the first round match on a strong note and will also hold the psychological edge over the Frenchman having beaten him in the last three of their meetings.
