Petra Martic v Zhang Shuai Head to Head

Other than a 2015 US Open qualifier where Martic had won their encounter in three sets, there have been two other top level matches in main draws of competitions and both have won one apiece.

Their most recent encounter came at the 2022 WTA Tokyo where Zhang won in straight sets.

Martic Has No Trouble against Golubic

After winning just one of her three matches at the United Cup to kick the season off, Martic did not have trouble in getting past Viktorija Golubic in her first round here.

Martic, who hadn’t won a main draw singles match at the Australian Open since 2020, clinched her second round berth with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Golubic. The match lasted an hour and 44 minutes and saw Martic grow into the encounter with her play.

Her serving improved drastically as the match went along, with her first and second serve numbers reading 68% and 38% in the first set and 75% and 50% in the second.

And while both Martic and Golubic committed similar number of unforced errors – 19 and 18 respectively – it was the Croat’s ability to find the winners when they really mattered that stood out. She blasted 37 of them past her opponent to come through easily.

Can she now make the third round at the Australian Open for the first time since 2019?

Shuai Overcomes Stutter to Send Tig Out

Having started the season with back to back defeats at Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2, Shuai finally found her bearings to overcome Patricia Tig in the opener here.

And that wasn’t without its own challenges with Shuai needing to overturn a mid-match stutter to grab a second round berth. The Chinese player won 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in two hours and five minutes in what turned out to be a strange contest.

After having eased through the first set, Shuai lost her serve in the very first game of the second but came back with a break in the eighth. Tig broke right back, saved two break-points and levelled things out.

But just when one thought the momentum had shifted, Shuai crashed through her opponent’s serve in the final set. Three breaks of serve and just three points lost on her own serve ensured Shuai’s maiden win of the season.

Can Shuai now live up to her rankings against Martic?

Martic v Shuai Prediction and Tip

Martic is a marginal favourite here but Shuai cannot be taken lightly here. We expect this to go the distance too, three-setter with either player with a chance to take this home.
