Jelena Ostapenko v Kateryna Baindl Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Baindl has a 100% record so far.

She won their meeting in Italy on clay in 2014, and again on the grass of Rosmalen two years later.

Their last encounter was back on clay at the French Open in 2018, the Ukrainian winning in straight sets.

Ostapenko Made to Work by Hungarian

This is the fourth time in her career that Ostapenko has made the third round of the Australian Open (she has never been further), but it has not all been plain sailing so far.

She began comfortably enough with a  straight sets win over Dayana Yastremska, the world no. 101, and she would not have expected her next opponent, Anna Bondar of Hungary, ranked 81st, to provide significant opposition.

But she was the first to drop her serve, levelled, only to go a break down, giving the Hungarian the chance to serve for the first set.

Unfortunately for her, she fluffed her lines at the wrong time, allowed herself to be broken again, and it was Ostapenko who came out on top in the subsequent tie-break.

Holding serve became problematic for both women in the second set, and there were four successive breaks, before, serving to stay in the set, Ostapenko dropped hers once more.

Suddenly, Bondar’s form disappeared, and Ostapenko raced into a five love lead in the third set.

The Hungarian then had a break back point, saved one match point, but not the second.

Baindl’s Unexpected Run Continues

Baindl had never been beyond the first round in Melbourne or further than the second round of any Grand Slam event.

But the woman more often found on the Challenger tour has defied expectations by reaching the third round.

She had been pushed hard in the first round, at least in the first two sets, by the world no. 119 Kamilla Rakhimova, before finally easing to victory, which earned her a second round tie with the American Caty McNally, ranked one place higher than her.

It was mainly one way traffic in the first set, as Baindl grabbed the advantage with an early break, and followed that up with a second to take the lead.

The second was much closer, with four successive breaks of serve in the middle of it reflecting the changing fortunes.

Eventually it needed a tie-break to separate them. Baindl went a mini-break-up, McNally recovered it, but then dropped her serve, giving the Ukrainian the chance io serve for the match.

She duly took it.

Ostapenko v Baindl Prediction and Tip

Whilst Ostapenko is the seeded player, the weight of history is on the side of the Ukarainian, having won all their previous matches.

However, it is some years since they last met, and they have never played each other on outdoor hard courts before.

The Latvian may be the slight favourite, but it could be close.
