Ekaterina Alexandrova v Magda Linette Head to Head

Alexandrova and Linette have faced off twice before this and both have won one match apiece. In 2019 in Seoul, it was Linette who came through in straight sets while they faced off in Charleston last year and Alexandrova dropped just two games in that encounter.

Alexandrova Needs Three Sets against Townsend

Alexandrova was a 2/5 favourite coming into her second round encounter against American Taylor Townsend but needed to overcome a one set deficit before winning in three.

The Russian sent Townsend out with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in round two, having started out very slowly as she lost her serve three times in the opening set.

She retaliated with two breaks of serves in the second set but then fell 2-0 behind in the third, staring at the possibility of a loss. A break-point in the very next game, however, was converted and two more such breaks of serves followed as Alexandrova wrapped it up off her very first match-point.

Having entered this tournament after having withdrawn from her Adelaide International second round encounter, Alexandrova had beaten Ysaline Bonaventure in her opener. Can she now make the fourth round here for the first time in her career?

Linette Sends Kontaveit Crashing

Linette wasn’t quite the favourite going into her second round match against the former world number two Anett Kontaveit but there was always that possibility she would put up a strong showing.

In fact we had a sense that an upset was on the cards given how strongly Linette has begun her season and that’s exactly how things panned out.

For a moment it looked like Kontaveit had her opponent’s measure when she overturned a break of serve to dish out two of the same to Linette and grab lead. And when Linette dropped her serve in the very first game of the second set, the writing seemed to be on the wall.

Except Linette is nothing else if not gritty.

She fought back to register back to back breaks and levelled the match in doing so before breaking Kontaveit two more times in the final set again. While her opponent did find a way to break back once, Linette served out the match to love and marched into the third round here for only the second time in her career.

Alexandrova v Linette Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova is 7/10 favourite here but as we had said before the Kontaveit match too, take nothing away from Linette who looked to have picked up a lot from the other Polish player in the draw – Iga Swiatek. Expect Linette to squeak through again.
