Andrey Rublev v Dan Evans Head to Head

There have six previous matches between these two at the highest level after they had also faced off twice on the Challenger circuit. At the former it’s 3-3 on head to head while at the latter, they both won a match apiece.

Last year itself they played each other three times with Rublev winning two of those and Evans clinching their match at the Montreal Masters.

Evans Rushes Past Chardy

Jeremy Chardy is a 35-year-old veteran who hasn’t missed the entire of the 2022 season and was playing his first competitive match here after his 2021 US Open appearance. And he won that against Daniel Elahi Galan to reach round two and set up a clash with Evans.

Beating Galan is one thing but Evans, even without his best form under his belt, is a different proposition altogether and that’s what was on show in the encounter.

The Brit, who is ranked 30th in the world and has had made it through to the third round on two different occasions here before, clinched an easy 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 win over Chardy. The match lasted less than two hours.

Evans had earlier needed four sets against Facundo Bagnis but in this second round, the only time he looked in trouble was when he was broken back in the sixth game of the opening set. Evans broke right back and never looked behind as he faced just one more break-point in the entire encounter.

A difficult opponent awaits Evans for a place in the fourth round.

Rublev Builds On With Ruusuvuori Win

After making a shockingly under-par start to the season, Rublev looks to be coming into his own in this competition as he registered his second successive win here.

Following on from back to back first round losses in the Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2 tournament, Rublev first set Dominic Thiem out in straight sets in the first round before clinching his round of 32 place with a four-set win over Emil Ruusuvuori.

In a match lasting two hours and 45 minutes, Rublev drubbed his Finnish opponent 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to reach the third round.

Rublev was broken just once – it came in the third set where he valiantly fought to level things out only to lose the tie-breaker. Other than that he saved eight break-points while breaking his opponent five times.

51 winners punctuated the Rublev effort but the 50 unforced errors that came with it might be a concern for the Russian as he grows into the tournament.

Can Rublev now tame his British opponent who looks to have rediscovered some of his form here?

Rublev v Evans Prediction and Tip

Rublev starts an obvious favourite but he is still some way away from being at his best and that’s where Evans could take advantage of the situation. Rublev should still win this but Evans might take a set off him.
