Jenson Brooksby v Tommy Paul Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Cincinnati Open and Paul had won that first round encounter.

Brooksby Stuns Second Seeded Ruud

After the top seeded Rafael Nadal stumbled out of the competition on Wednesday, it was the turn of the second seeded Casper Ruud to follow suit too as he fell in four sets to Brooksby.

Starting out as a 5/2 underdog in this second round encounter, Brooksby was on court for nearly four hours before coming through 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2.

Brooksby could have wrapped things up in straight sets too in fact, as he grabbed a two sets to love lead and then broke Ruud to go 2-0 up in the third set. Very soon he was 5-3 up and serving for the match, the American held three match-points.

All of those were saved by Ruud who then broke Brooksby and took the set into a tie-breaker. The momentum looked to have shifted as he won that to push the encounter into a fourth but not to be outdone, Brooksby took control of the match again by taking a 3-0 lead there.

A three-time ATP finalist, this was Brooksby’s second win over a top-10 player following one against Stefanos Tsitsipas last year in Indian Wells.

With that kind of talent, Brooksby could be in line to go farther this time.

Paul Wins Topsy-Turvy Battle with Fokina

Much like his upcoming opponent, Paul was up against another player ranked in his 30s and for a while he looked like he was up against it.

And then Paul fought back strongly, coming back from two sets to one down to seal a five-set contest and his place in the third round. In three hours and 52 minutes, Paul came through 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.

Paul was aided in the final two sets by the 29 unforced errors that Fokina made but more vitally his inability to hit a lot of winners. On the other hand, Paul earned 23 winners in that same time-frame while making only 18 unforced errors.

This followed a straight-set win over Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round, turning this into a potentially delicious all-American battle between two players to watch out in the future.

Brooksby v Paul Prediction and Tip

Nothing much to choose between these two but Paul’s experience gives him a slight edge for us. Might win this in four or five sets.
