Jessica Pegula v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head

Krejcikova was a favourite going up against the highly-talented Anhelina Kalinina, sure, but it wasn’t like the Ukrainian did not have a chance given she was coming off some crucial form.
Kalinina had sent Petra Kvitova packing in the previous round after all.
Here, in the third round though, Krejcikova was having none of that and in a mere hour and 26 minutes she had rolled Kalinina over for a 6-2, 6-3 win. Even the one time that Krejcikova was broken in the match came in the first set after she had taken a 5-0 lead.
The difference in the winners/unforced errors differential between the two players wasn’t that great but it was Krejcikova’s ability to win the big points that kept her nose ahead throughout.
This was Krejcikova’s third successive straight-set win with Sara Bejlek and Clara Burel having managed to take only four and five games respectively from her. Can the Czech now up the ante against one of the pre-tournament favourites?

Pegula Routs Kostyuk
66 minutes is all that Pegula needed to win her third round encounter against Marta Kostyuk to set up this meeting with Krejcikova.
A longish first game of the match saw Pegula win a break off her third chance and from that point on, it was all one-way traffic. The American broke her opponent six times in the encounter, with Kostyuk facing break-points in each of her serving game bar one.
By the time Kostyuk finally found a way to get past Pegula’s serve she was already 6-0, 4-1 down and Pegula quickly wrapped things up with another break of serve.
This follows straight-set wins against Jacqueline Cristian and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the tournament, having earlier won four in a row to help USA win the United Cup in the first couple of weeks of this season.
Pegula’s only loss this season had come in the first match she played against Czech left-hander Petra Kvitova. Can she get past this Czech now?

Pegula has been such kind of form that it’s tough to see beyond her here. Sure, Krejcikova is doing well in recent times and getting back to the kind of form had seen her make the singles quarterfinals and doubles title here last season but Pegula’s level has risen manifold.
