Pegula Cruises Past Kostyuk

Jessica Pegula continued her dominant run in the tournament, handing Marta Kostyuk a straight sets shellacking in the third round on Friday.

The American is in sensational form at the moment and the win was her seventh consecutive victory in the new season. She had won four of her five singles matches at the United Cup, losing only the opening singles match to Petra Kvitova.

After playing a major role in Team USA’s successful campaign at the inaugural mixed-gender tournament, Pegula is now demolishing opponents in the season’s first major. The world no. 3 began her campaign with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Jaqueline Cristian and then she knocked out Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the second round.

In the third round on Friday, the third seed broke her opponent thrice in each set to win the contest 6-0, 6-2 in just an hour and six minutes. Pegula made just nine unforced errors in the match to the Ukrainian’s 39. The American won 59% of the total points in what was another quick win.

Pegula is chasing a third consecutive last eight spot at the Australian Open. She bowed out of the quarterfinals in the previous two editions, but will be eager to go deeper this year and going by her form, she looks set for a deep run.

Pegula’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 6-1
  • beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)
  • beat Marta Kostyuk 6-0, 6-2

Krejcikova Sends Kalinina Packing

Like Pegula, Barbora Krejcikova, too, has displayed terrific form at this year’s Australian Open. The Czech had made her quarterfinal debut in the tournament last year and is one away from matching her best in Melbourne.

Ranked no. 23 in the world, Krejcikova has comfortably dispatched her first three opponents this year. She started with a 6-3, 6-1 thrashing of compatriot Sara Bejlek and then ousted Clara Burel 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

The 20th seed kept her solid run going with a third round win over Anhelina Kalinina on Friday.

Krejcikova broke Kalinina thrice in the first set, racing to a 5-0 lead before the Ukrainian pulled a break back, only to lose the set two games later.

Having outplayed the world no. 39 in the first set, Krejcikova did not relent and continued to put pressure on her in the second set. She broke Kalinina twice to win the contest 6-2, 6-3.

The 2021 French Open champion, who went through a tough phase in the middle of the last season, finished 2022 on a high, winning two indoor titles.

She won one and lost one in her first WTA tournament of 2023 in Adelaide-2 but is back in her element in the Australian Open. She will be playing Pegula for the first time in her career in the fourth round and it is expected to go down the wire with both players coming into the contest in excellent form. But Pegula is on a seven match win streak.

Can the Czech end that run on Sunday?
