Swiatek Trounces Bucsa
It took just 55 minutes for the top seed Iga Swiatek to dispatch Spain’s Cristina Bucșa in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday and move into the last 16 for the fourth consecutive year.
Making a fifth appearance in the Melbourne major, the Pole has looked in sublime touch, winning all three of her matches in straight sets.
Jule Niemeier tested the 21-year-old in a two-hour opening round contest, but Swiatek still won that match 6-4, 7-5. She needed just an hour and 25 minutes to beat Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3 in the next match, before producing her best performance of the tournament in the Round of 32 on Friday.
Swiatek dropped just one point on her serve and five on return as she bageled the world no. 100 Bucsa in the first set. She didn’t step off the pedal in the second set, and dropped just five points on her serve and eight on return to outclass the Spaniard 6-0, 6-1.
Swiatek didn’t face a break point in the match and converted half of the 10 that she held in the match.
It was a clinical performance from the Pole, who is chasing her fourth Grand Slam title and a first in Australia. She made it past the fourth round in Melbourne for the first time last year, reaching the semifinals before being halted by Danielle Collins. She could have faced Collins in the fourth round this year, but the American has been dispatched by Rybakina.
Swiatek and Rybakina both won Grand slams last year and therefore, it promises to be an engaging affair. While Swiatek won the French and the U.S. Open during a season that saw her claim eight titles, Rybakina triumphed at Wimbledon. They have met just once before with Swiatek winning that contest in Ostrava two years ago.
Swiatek had come into the tournament with a 3-1 record in the United Cup, losing only to Jessica Pegula. She has constantly raised her game in the tournament so far and looks like the top contender for the title.
Swiatek’s Road to Fourth Round
- beat Jule Niemeier 6-4, 7-5
- beat Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3
- beat Cristina Bucșa 6-0, 6-1

Rybakina Holds Off Collins
Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina held off a comeback bid from last year’s Australian Open runner-up Danieele Collins in the third round on Friday to move into the last 16 for the first time in the Melbourne major.
Rybakina, the world no. 25, had won her opening two rounds in straight sets, but was made to work hard for her latest victory. She was quick off the blocks against the world no. 11, breaking her twice and taking a one-set lead, but Collins rebounded. The American saved a break point at 4-4 (30-40) and then went on to convert the only break point that she held in the entire match to take the second set 7-5.
Pegged back, the Kazakh was determined not to let the match slip away and she started the third in emphatic style, breaking Collins twice and building a 4-0 lead. She had little problem in knocking out the American from that point on.
The 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory crafted over two hours and six minutes was Rybakina’s longest so far in this year’s Australian Open. She had beaten Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 25 minutes in the first round and had needed under an hour to beat Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 64.
Friday’s win was Rybakina’s second over Collins this year. She had beaten the American in the first round in Adelaide-1 but lost her second round match in the season opener.
Rybakina then lost her opener in Adelaide-2 thus bringing a 1-2 record into the first Grand Slam of the season. But the three wins in Melbourne would have boosted her confidence and she could give the top seed a run for her money on Sunday.
Rybakina’s Road to Fourth Round
- beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-3
- beat Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-1
- beat Danielle Collins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2
