Linda Fruhvirtova v Donna Vekic Head to Head

They have never faced off in a competitive match but rather interestingly played each other at the Kooyong Exhibition competition at the start of this season. Vekic had won that one in straight sets.

Fruhvirtova Surprises Vondrousova

Marketa Vondrousova had exhibited enough form in the lead-up to this third round encounter to warrant starting out as a bookmakers’ favourite at 1/3 to beat Fruhvirtova. The Czech 17-year-old had different ideas as she overcame the former French Open runner-up in a three-set contest.

Fruhvirtova won 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes to march into the fourth round of a major for the first time. Her previous, incidentally, was a second round appearance at last year’s US Open.

The world number 82, who is expected to break into the top 60 after this showing, was on court for two hours and 10 minutes and was broken six times in the entire match. Rather interestingly, there wasn’t much to choose between the two in most other stats too – whether it was the first serves in, first serve points won, winners, unforced errors or even their ace count.

But where she scored over her fellow Czech countrywoman was her ability to win the bigger points, which at her age makes for an excellent storyline.

Can she now upend Vekic’s run in this tournament?

Vekic Carries Good Form Forward

Only three players in the WTA top 50 have so far not lost a match this season. Vekic is only player outside of the top 50 to have done so in 2023 and she enters her fourth round match on the back of six successive victories.

This includes a third round win here against Nuria Parrizas Diaz where she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 result in a mere 65 minutes to make it this far at Australian Open for only the second time in her career.

Vekic faced one break-point in each of the two sets and was broken both times but by then she had already gone 4-1 up in both those sets. Rather interestingly, on both those occasions, Vekic followed it up with another break of her own.

Such was Vekic’s dominance, she won 27 of the 46 points on her opponent’s serve while her 20 winners and five aces made it difficult for Parrizas Diaz to make things work.

Vekic was coming into this round with wins over Oksana Selekhmeteva and Liudmilla Samsonova and once can see the kind of confidence on show.

The question is if she can match up to the on-court exuberance of Fruhvirtova in this fourth round encounter?

Fruhvirtova v Vekic Prediction and Tips

Vekic is a favourite, sure but we could see a battle-hardened Fruhvirtova push her in this contest and we could see a third set as well.
