The pair have met once before on the senior tour, meeting in the Quarter Final of the Moscow Open last year, with the Russian winning a three-setter 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Medvedev Looking for Another Good Week
23-year old Medvedev is looking to build on a strong start to 2019 which has seen him already win his fourth ATP title on the senior tour, and reach the final of another, the Brisbane International where he was beaten by Kei Nishikori.
With a semi-final in Rotterdam under his belt as well, he is now starting to build the consistency that will help push up the rankings from his current position of 15.
With sterner tests to come, Berankis is the sort of opponent that he would have handpicked if he had the choice. He will hope to dispose of him easily and quickly, so he his fresh for the rest of the week.
Berankis, A Lithuanian Qualifier
28-year-old Berankis entered the Dubai tournament via the qualifying rounds, beating Constant Lestienne in straight sets to begin with and then getting the better of Mirza Basic.
On paper at least, should not represent too severe an opening test for his opponent. Although he has a career singles high ranking of 50, he is now languishing down at 117, and spends most of his time on the Challenger tour, where he has enjoyed success in both singles and doubles.
Just getting this far in Dubai with the cheque that it brings is probably as much as he could have hoped from his week’s work.
