Ostapenko Reaches Quarters in Melbourne for the First Time

2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko will make her quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open after the Latvian knocked out seventh seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round on Sunday.

Ostapenko, who had never gone past the third round in her past seven appearances in Melbourne, was aggressive throughout her Round of 16 contest. She struck 30 winners and converted all three of the break points that she held in the match. She also faced eight break points and she saved seven of them to win the one-hour-and-34-minute clash 7-5, 6-3.

Ranked no. 17 in the world, Ostapenko will be playing her first major quarterfinal since her run to the semis in Wimbledon in 2018.

She hasn’t had a huge impact ever since her exploits at Roland Garros or her run in Wimbledon 2018, but having made the last eight in Melbourne, she will look to make the most of the opportunity.

She has looked good since the start of the tournament. Following a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over Dayana Yastremska in the first round, she was tested by Anna Bondár in the second round. But after two closely contested set, Ostapenko raced past the Hungarian in the final set for a 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-0 victory.

She carried that form into the third round and breezed past Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 6-0.

Ostapenko didn’t come into the tournament in great form as she had won just one match in the two Adelaide tournaments. But has got into a rhythm in Melbourne and is looking dangerous. She will also back herself against Rybakina as she has won both of their previous meetings and is yet to drop a set against the Kazakh.

Ostapenko’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-2
  • beat Anna Bondár 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-0
  • beat Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 6-0
  • beat Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-3

Rybakina Takes Down the Top Seed

Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina stunned top seed Iga Swiatek in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday.

The 22nd seed started the match with a break of serve but couldn’t hold on to the lead for long as the world no. 1 drew level at 2-2. Rybakina broke again for a second time in the fourth game and then did not let the lead slip away as she took the opening set.

She found herself a break down early in the second, with the Pole looking to stay in the match. However, Rybakina soon got back in the set, with a break in the fifth game and then broke again in the ninth before serving out the match in an hour and 30 minutes.

Currently ranked no. 25, Rybakina should have been ranked much higher but she didn’t get any points for winning the Wimbledon and that showed in her rankings. However, the disappointment of not receiving points for her Wimbledon triumph is behind her now and she is closing in on another Grand Slam success.

Having never won more than two matches in Melbourne before, she has now won four and looks hungry for more. Interestingly in her last two matches she knocked out last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins and last year’s semifinalist Swiatek respectively and that should be a huge confidence booster in the back end of the tournament.

It was predicted to be a Swiatek versus Gauff quarterfinal, but both have been shocked by former major champions. It will be interesting to see who gets a step closer to a second Grand Slam title.

Rybakina’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-3
  • beat Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-1
  • beat Danielle Collins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2
  • beat Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4
