Khachanov Breezes Past Nishioka

Eighteenth seed Karen Khachanov stormed into his first Australian Open quarterfinal with a crushing defeat of Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the fourth round on Sunday.

The Russian is now a win away from a second straight major semifinal. He had reached his maiden major semifinal at the U.S. Open last year.

On Sunday, the world no. 20 stamped his authority right from the beginning of the contest. He double bagelled the Japanese in the first two sets and then won the first two games in the third as well, before Nishioka finally got on the board, by breaking Khachanov’s serve. Nishioka gave a tough fight in the third set, but eventually lost in the tiebreak.

Khachanov served 15 aces and hit 30 winners during his 6-0, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) victory. He also won 93% points on his first serve was so dominant in the second set that he dropped just two points in the entire set.

This is Khachanov’s third tournament in 2023 and he has reached the last eight in all of them. While he couldn’t make the semifinals in either of the Adelaide tournaments, he will be hoping to reach the final four in Melbourne. However, he faces an opponent against whom he has a 1-2 record. Khachanov beat Korda at Wimbledon in 2021, but lost both their meetings last year. Korda won in Cincinnati and Antwerp in straight sets.

Can Khachanov make it 2-2 against the American? He has been playing well in the tournament. After breezing past Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets in the first round, he held off Jason Kubler and Frances Tiafoe in back-to-back four-set matches, before demolishing Nishioka in the round of 16.

Khachanov’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-0
  • beat Jason Kubler 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2
  • beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9)
  • beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4)

Korda Wins Dramatic Five-Setter Against Hurkacz

Twenty-five years after Petr Korda won the Australian Open title in 1998, his son, Sebastian, has marched into the quarterfinals of the tournament.

In a dramatic five-set fourth-round contest on Sunday, Korda showed nerves of steel as he edged past the 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7).

The 22-year-old had built a 7-3 lead in the final set tiebreak, but the Pole won four points in a row to tie the score at 7-7. But just when the match seemed to be tilting towards Hurkacz, Korda once again got his act together and finished off the match by winning the last three points.

The world no. 31, who had ousted the seventh seed Daniil Medvedev in the third round, will be featuring in his first major quarterfinal. He has been in tremendous form this year, having reached the final of Adelaide International in his only other tournament of 2023 so far.

It was Korda’s fifth career final, but he could not add to the only title he won in Emilia Romagna in 2021. Following that run in Adelaide, he has now won four on the trot in Melbourne, thus improving to 8-1 in 2023.

The 29th seed began his Australian Open challenge with a four set win over Cristian Garin in the opening round, and then made quick work of Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki in the second round.

His biggest win came over the two-time Australian Open runner-up Medvedev in the third round. He struck 50 winners and won 36 of 48 net points to beat the world no. 8, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in three hours.

The fourth round contest against Hurkacz was a three-hour-and-30-minute affair. Korda was out-aced 8-19, and also hit seven fewer winners than the Pole’s 49, but he was good on the net once again, winning 25 of 34 net points.

Korda’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Cristian Garín 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2
  • beat Yosuke Watanuki 6-2, 7-5, 6-4
  • beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)
  • beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7)
