Tsitsipas Wins Five-Set Thriller

Two days ago, Jannik Sinner had come back from two sets down to knock out Marton Fucsovics. On Sunday, the Italian once again found himself two sets down, but yet again he valiantly came right back into the contest, sending the match into the final set.

But just when it seemed that the momentum had shifted towards Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas raised his level and overpowered the 15th seed to march into the Australian Open quarterfinals for the third consecutive year and fourth time in his career.

The top seed left in the men’s draw, Tsitsipas saved a staggering 22 of 26 break points that he faced in the match and converted 5 of 11 that he held to keep his unbeaten streak intact in 2023.

The Greek had won all four of his matches at the United Cup to start the new season and he carried that form into the Australian Open where he eased past the first three opponents before winning the nail-biter on Sunday.

Tsitsipas will now be aiming to reach his fourth semifinal at the Australian Open. He has never lost a quarterfinal in the Melbourne major and will be looking to keep that record intact when he takes on Jiri Lehcka in the last eight stage. He met Lehecka at the Rotterdam semifinal last year, and found himself under pressure after losing the first set, but bounced back to take the contest and reach one of his seven finals of 2022.

Despite reaching so many finals, the Greek could add just two titles to his previous seven as he finished the season with a 61-24 record on the tour.

He can expect Lehecka to once again ask a few difficult questions of him, but given the level at which he has been playing recently he should be well prepared to have all the answers.

Tsitsipas’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
  • beat Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3
  • beat Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3

Lehecka Upsets Another Seed

Jiri Lehecka moved into his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal by pulling off a shock win over sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who finished runner-up at the ATP NextGen Finals in 2022, got the first top 10 win of his career as he rallied from a set down to beat the world no. 7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3).

Lehecka endured 20 aces in the match and both players broke each other just once each, but it was the Czech’s superior performance in the tiebreaks that turned out to be decisive in the match.

It was the third seeded player that the world no. 71 took down at the Australian Open. He had begun the tournament by ousting the 21st seed Borna Coric 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 and had edged out the Cameron Norrie in a five-set third round contest on Friday. The only unseeded player that he played in the tournament was Christopher Eubanks of the U.S., whom he defeated in a four-set second-round contest.

Lehecka, who climbed 70 places in the rankings in 2022, had featured in all four of the majors for the first time last year. But he was knocked out in the opening round in all four. He has had a stellar start at the Australian Open and will be hoping put up another solid show against the more fancied Tsitsipas on Tuesday.

Lehecka’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Borna Coric 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
  • beat Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
  • beat Cameron Norrie 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4
  • beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3)
